Is Fin Aid terrible at Oberlin?

I got into oberlin, but with no money. I got the "deans scholarship" and the "trustee scholarship" etc. at all the 8/9 other schools that I got into. whats with oberlins fin aid? do they not give merit? My parents make too much for need based aid, but $42,000 is way too much with my brother also in college. Did anyone else get merit scholarships? As of now, Oberlin is being crossed of my list bec of the better schools with scholarships that i got into. Is this a bad decision and is there fin. aid hope?

Most of Oberlin's aid is need-based, which fits with the college's philosophy of social justice. There is a limited amount of merit scholarship money, but the majority of Oberlin's very generous financial aid budget is reserved for those who truly need it. If you think the FA office may have misunderstood your family's situation, then by all means get in touch with them to talk about it. They're certainly willing to listen.

I didn't get any money, but they gave me the most generous fin. aid with a $15,500 grant for the year. Most of their money is need based. If you get merit at Oberlin, it's because you had like 1450+ SATs and near perfect gpa.

I got the same award, the John Frederick Oberlin Scholarship, for the same amount as sdskyle did from Oberlin. I too didn't qualify for any need-based aid.

I'm pretty satisfied with what Oberlin offered me. Before I applied, I completed a financial aid estimator, which said I would get $27,000 grant. My family is (lower?) middle class and I have a brother in an in-state university. I still have some money I need to cough up, but I think I can make ends meet with scholarships/working. I've given up hope on playing the lotto.

there fin. aid is the most generous Ive received. I got the John F. Oberlin scholarship (I had a 33 ACT, so i guess thats slightly above 1450, and had made 4 semester B's and no C's in high school.. so its not incredibly hard to get... at least I didnt think i was a top applicatn at the school)..for 12k... on top of that, they gave me about 8k in grants and another 5k in loans/workstudy

seemed really generous for them to give me a grant on top of a loan.

I got the John F. Oberlin Scholarship and as much grant aid as I needed, plus loans and workstudy...it was very good

I also got the John F Oberlin Scholarship, but the financial aid still wasn't good enough, or nearly as good as other schools. I did qualify for need based aid, but they included huge amounts of loans compared to others (reed, wesleyan, swarthmore, and especially amherst).

Because Oberlin is very dedicated to social justice, the money that it has (and there’s quite a bit of it for a small school) goes to the people who demonstrate need for it. I am a student at Oberlin, and I’m going for practically free. I would not have been able to attend college at all without that money, and I’m extremely grateful for it.

But yes, I realize your financial situation is difficult, as well, with your brother in college. Contact the Office of Financial Aid and try to sway them–they’re very cooperative.
