Hello everyone,

I'm an international student and junior in college. My major is Global Studies. I want to enter Law School to get a JD degree. However, I want to be an entrepreneur or start my own business in future. I'm interested in Law because I want an advanced degree. I always find Law more intriguing compared to M.A. in International Studies or Global Studies. I also believe that a JD degree will prove to be more prestigious in future compared to an M.A. Am I wrong?

I do not have intentions to become an attorney nor do I want to see myself as a Lawyer for the rest of my life. However, I might work as an attorney for a couple of years just gain experience or satisfy my interest in Law. Going to Law school will not cause any financial debt nor will I be faced with any financial burden. I prefer to enter Law school because it yields to a JD degree that I have always wanted and is personal satisfaction for me. I may not practice law.

Is Law School right for me? I would be interested in a JD degree even if it is from a tier two or tier three Law school. How many people that have JD and don't practice Law think they wish they hadn't studied Law? Do you think I will be well off studying an M.A. in International Relations before I start my own business? I know none of them will yield to a career in business, but I still prefer one of them. I still need an advanced degree.

Thanks
Kris

Hi. What country are you from(if you don’t mind my asking)?

EDIT: Would you be willing to study for about three years at law school even if you don’t plan to become an attorney?

Hello. I’m from India.

Yes, I would be willing to study Law for three years although I don’t plan to become an attorney. I would be studying an M.A. anyway. My future goal is to become an entrepreneur.

M.A. as in masters or bachelor of arts? (I know in some countries an MA is a bachelor of arts…)

EDIT: I think if you can afford and have the drive and passion for it, going to law school is probably a good choice. I work as a legal assistant and, from experience, know that it is becoming increasingly difficult to have a lasting, financially stable career in law. As you do not intend to become an attorney, is will not affect you.

I’d ask for the opinion of someone more qualified to answer your question though…

Best of luck! :)

I would say go for it! Just having the thought process of a lawyer can make you a very good entrepreuner. Also, a law degree would allow you to have a better mindset of how to interpret laws and regulations better so that you would know your business did not cross the line of law without the need to consult your lawyer. I know that you can read read cases and statutes without going to law school, but interpreting/manipulating/using legal principles to your advantage requires a whole different mindset.

I myself are one of the people who are currently in law school without thinking of going into a legal career

In my opinion, based on my having been a lawyer for many years, you should not go to law school unless you want to become a lawyer. You will be spending three years, and a lot of money, studying material that you will not need if you wish to go into business.

While it’s nice to know that you have so much money available that going to law school would not be a burden, you should spend your time (of which you only have a finite amount) working at something that will be much more useful to you.

Instead, think about what subject or degree would be useful - perhaps an MBA with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, if that’s what you are thinking of.
