I would really like some advice as to whether or not Goucher is a good choice for me. I have a 3.8 GPA, and I would consider myself a very motivated/hardworking person. I have read many reviews that say the school is for pot-heads and hipsters. Normally I wouldn't even consider Goucher because it is not a well known school. However, I play soccer and the coach offered me a spot. I have been offered spots on teams for other colleges, but Goucher has also offered me a merit scholarship (which would make the financial so much easier on my family). I really like Goucher in the sense that it has a beautiful campus and the fact that it has small class sizes and I think I can get a great education there, but I am worried that if I attend Goucher I will have problems getting into Graduate School because Goucher does not have that strong of a reputation. All in all I am wondering if 1) Is the school really filled with that many "lazy"(for lack of a better word) people? and 2) Will Goucher's reputation hurt me in the future when applying to post undergraduate education?

Goucher has offered you a merit scholarship for 2014 or 2015? What other schools are you considering? How important is the merit scholarship in your decision? Goucher is an excellent LAC where you’d find many hardworking and motivated students. There is an opportunity to apply for the International Scholar’s Program which can give you a leg up with a little bit of extra work (and extra stipend for Goucher’s required study abroad) and individual departments offer honors status based on their own criteria. This is a school where you’d probably rise to the top if you want to, and from what I understand (I asked many questions about Goucher in the last year) there is a terrific opportunity through small classes and good faculty-student connections to find internships and other opportunities. Goucher can give you statistics about graduating class grad school/prof school admissions (and yes they absolutely prepare students for medical school etc). My DD is also hard working and very motivated, got a great merit scholarship for Goucher, and has been accepted as an Int’l Scholar. She considers its potential wide open. I hope that helps - good luck in your search!

This is from Goucher’s website, and might be interesting for you: http://www.goucher.edu/admissions/goucher-success

Every LAC has its share of quirky people who feel free to let their freak flags fly. You won’t find a school without hipsters and pot. College is a place to check stuff out away from home and the people you grew up with. so if students have a tendency in one direction, an LAC might be a place to push boundaries a little further before they put on the power suit. Other people like LACs because they have to learn to broaden their expectations of what a normal person might dress, speak, bathe like. To find out if you’d fit in there, you need to visit (an overnight if possible). I wouldn’t call Goucher an excellent LAC, but it could be very good for you. You don’t give us enough info to tell how you would fit. With a 3.8 there are a lot of schools that might want you and that would be a good fit, so don’t give up on LACs or any type of school because GC didn’t turn out to be right for you.

Thank you all for all the replies. I have done so much research and it was nice to get more an answer more tailored to my situation.

Goucher is well known by adults, not kids who are obsessed with prestige lol. It’s known for being one of the Colleges that Change Lives
