Hi, I got accepted at Grinnell, and I want to know if Grinnell is a gay friendly school? I'm an openly gay male and also international, so for me it is really important to know that Grinnell is the right fit for me. For what I have read this is a very respectful college about diversity, and even its new president is an African-American gay men who is also a father and lives with his life partner, but I will like to know how is to be a gay international student at Grinnell?? Thank you.

I don’t go there (yet) so I don’t have any firsthand experience, but I can tell you that Grinnell is currently ranked #15 by the Princeton Review for “Gay Community Accepted.”

My friend is a gay international, who was pretty much openly gay from the first day on. Except for his old roommate, who had much more a problem with his personality than his sexual orientation, he did not encounter any extremely hostile people. In fact he has a lot of friends, who accept him for who he is. I think most people who cannot deal with him, have much more a problem with his personality than is sexuality.
There are a lot of openly gay students in Grinnell. Grinnell has a lot of LGBTQA groups such as Stonewall Coalition or Queer People of Color.

I won’t lie to you, there are some people who have a hard time dealing with homosexuality because they are not used to it, but there are few extreme homophobic people on Campus. I haven’t met any of them, but that’s probably also because they don’t run in the same circles I’m in. In general, Grinnell is very accepting of LGBTQA and has a lot of groups and events (such as Pride Week) that promote support and understanding.

I don’t think Grinnell has any problems with a person being gay or not being gay. The newly appointed president of the college is openly gay and he has been received with open arms. Grinnell is a very forward thinking and very open school.

And Iowa is the only mid-western state to have approved gay marriage, so Grinnell is not a liberal ‘outpost’ on this issue.

Hey, I just realized that future president Kington and his partner can now get married if they want. How nice!

Grinnell definitely is gay friendly. Iowa is also one of only five states in the US where same sex couples can get married legally.
