Is Harvey Mudd worth the $$?

Hi,

Posted something similar a couple of days ago but wanted to get some more opinions. Basically, I have the option of either applying ED to Mudd as an athletic recruit (not guaranteed, but high chance of admission) or going to the University of Toronto for chemical engineering. I’m Canadian, so U of T would be much cheaper than Harvey Mudd (20k USD / year vs full price for Mudd). I hope to work in the States in the future.

While U of T is a good program, I’m not completely sure if I want to be “bound” into one program. I’m interested in exploring a major in engineering, math or possibly Computer science – a friend of mine at HMC said that Mudd is a good place for those trying to figure out what they’d like to do in STEM. I also like the small LAC nature of Mudd, the fact I can swim in a D3 setting and obviously Mudd’s location/weather.

For current and/or past Mudders who had to pay a hefty price for Mudd: was it worth it? Is the ROI really as good as it’s made out to be? Or would you recommend just going to a cheaper in-province (aka in-state) option for engineering?

Engineering always have good ROI, no matter which college you go to. If you go to Harvey Mudd and pay the $300,000, you’ll be able to make it back after a few years of working in a high tech company. If you go to U Toronto, you’ll also be able to make it back after an even shorter period of time. Your choice should be really base on whether you want to continue to swim, and the weather, and the LAC vs large public school.
