Is High Point actually a good school?

I agree it’s what you do and the person you are that seals deal with a job but make no mistake the school can play into it. Just like HPU has internships so do the big schools. To change the subject can anyone tell me if the school of Pharmacy broke ground yet? Originally it was to be done May of this year and then was postponed to be done fall of this year. My D was considering the Pharm school but it was too much of a risk to commit to HPU if it would not be ready. Ultimately she went into business but I was curious if the Pharm school ever did get off the ground?

Good news from the land of OZ…M son is graduating from the HP business school (BS BA and Double Minor Marketing and Sales) in May 2014. He has already completed three job interviews with Fortune 500 companies and has a fourth coming up in Pa. next week (sales and marketing) at a mid size company. He has received one job offer already with better then average compensation. He has competed for these positions against kids from a variety of school. FYI-Not one asked if the HPU business program was accredited or what his GPA was, all were extremely impressed by his two excellent (PAID) business internship experiences, communication, writing skills, and resume quality . Each company did a ton of research on my son, calling professional and personal references, and looking at his Linkden network and social media accounts. His HPU education did add value and opportunity, but my son’s hard work, hustle, and persistence seems to be the key to this initial success. Solid Education + Real Life Skills = Real World Opportunities. Spread the word !!!

MPG that’s great and you hit the nail on the head… a hard working kid will do well. He went out there and GOT those internships and made himself successful. No interviewer will ever ask the kid the question about the accreditation. That is something they will either know or not know on their own. (There are websites and lists of those 500+ colleges) It’s the employers prerogative to see if that matters to them or not. Some employers it matters not at all, some it does a great deal. So happy for your son and his hard work. Much success in the future to him!

Lefty,

I completely agree that the school matters. Especially in the case of on campus interviews since employers cannot go to all 2100+ colleges. They use rankings, proximity, past experience with the school, word of mouth and other factors to determine where they will interview students. I was just responding to the posters saying don’t go to High Point because its accreditation comes from one body versus another. I’ve had a business degree for 30 years and I have no idea what the accrediting body was or if my university even was accredited. The simple fact is you get a business degree to learn about business. Judging by the US News Rankings, High Point seems to be doing a better than average job.

Congratulations to your son MJP. did he get these interviews through HPU’s placement office or through his own initiative?

Lefty you were asking about the pharmacy school. I believe they are still waiting on some zoning approvals but expecting to break ground soon. It will be interesting to see if this school succeeds, because there is an over-supply of pharmacy grads nationwide, and we already have 3 pharma schools here in NC.

Inquisitive…The interviews and internships were obtained through my sons initiative using his Linkden network (friends, family, school, and professional contacts). He also spent many hours online researching company websites and college employment search engines for internship and entry job opportunities. From his experience it seems like there are internship and employment opportunities out there, it takes commitment and a lot of effort. I think most kids either lack the time commitment or just have no clue on how to network. Should be a required class at all schools.
