Is history really important?

Is history something that the admission officers will also seek when viewing one's transcript? I am an international student so I only took Canadian history last year with a final mark of 92%. Is it considered good? I also has some background in Chinese history because I took it in China from Grade 7 to 9; unfortunately they will not be shown on the official transcript according to my guidance counsellor and the scores are like 88~89.

I am now a junior and I am not sure whether I should take American history/European history next year or self-study world history (because it contains many contents about Chinese history which I am quite familiar with). Any ideas?

European history.

My intended major will be humanities/social sciences by the way.

A 92 is a sufficiently good grade. I wouldn’t worry about it.

However, admissions officers definitely look at history classes on your transcript. History classes fall into the broader social studies category of high school classes, and admissions officers like to see a number of social studies classes (3+).

If you plan on being a humanities/social science major drop math and/or science and take 2 history classes (and if you do that I’d recommend American and European) and an extra other social science class, or take all three history classes. That is if you can do this, which I don’t actually know.

yes you’ll sound smart by bringing up history in conversation,
plus you’ll probably like wwii movies for the rest of your life

Yay, fellow Canadian :stuck_out_tongue: And what a coincidence, I’m a junior, too! And I got 92% on Canadian history as well… Whoa. Cool.

Anyway. I think it’ll be good to take as many humanity courses (including history) as possible not only because it shows your interest but also because it’ll prep you for what you’ll study in the future. For course REQUIREMENTS, go on CollegeBoard and check out Am I On Track thing for the colleges you’re interested in :)

OMG! I’m a Leafs fan and a prospective history major! :)

A- Screw Maple Leafs.

B- Yes, history is important especially if you want to do history/social science. History is VERY important in every humanities and social science field because it provides the historical context for every subject you could possibly study. (Btw, I am a humanities major lol)

lololololololololololol

Some science classes are also taught from a historical perspective.

I didn’t say I was proud of my red wings this year.

Personally, I think history is horribly boring on its own. Especially American History, most useless stuff I’ve ever read.
But it can be interesting when you learn about it in context of something else. For example I was reading some science literature, in which the introduction gave an historical background for the discoveries they were discussing. Certainly enhanced the experience for me. So I guess “applied” history is alright, but not pure history.

Apparently we only have pure history available in our high school.

Well yes, that’s why it’s boring. You should still try to do well in your history classes though
