Is it a bad idea to have a reach-heavy list?

As of right now, I have two safeties and three matches. I have about 7 (plus or minus a couple) reaches. I wanted to narrow down my list, but the only schools I want to take off are matches. Would it be a bad idea to have two safeties, two matches, and a lot of reaches?

If you have one safety that you like well enough to attend in the event that all else goes wrong, then you are fine. Build your list upwards from there.

As long as your safeties and true and financial safeties and you’ll be happy at them, you don’t need matches. But the issue with this strategy is you may well not end up at the best college you could have. Some are fine with that, others not so much.

i have technically 2 semi safeties, one match, and 4 reaches
