Is it a good idea to take calc I and calc II?

I'm a freshman doing premed. I came out with a gpa of 3.35 for the first semester. I took calc I this past semester and I'm signed up to take calc II next semester. Is that the normal route for premed? Or should I take something like stats?

I’m pretty sure you need 2 semesters of calc for med school. Even if you don’t, you should finish the sequence. You could take a semester of stats in addition, if you think it would be helpful.

Most schools expect two semesters of college math. Many take stat instead of calc – I can’t think of any off of the top of my head that require calc I and II, although I have not really researched Harvard, Stanford, etc. The schools I have looked into do not require calc, however.

HMS requires Calc I & II; however, it is the only school requiring both. I would generally suggest taking Calc I & Stats over Calc I & II as more schools require stats than calc II, but you should Google med school requirements yourself…

I know premed requirements require only one year of math. They include courses above calc I and stats. I did well in calc I mainly because I took last year in highschool, and I’m hoping that I can do just as well in calc II. Is stats much easier?also, I’ve heard stats is much more applicable to a medical student as opposed to calc II.

Generally speaking, students tend to do better in stats than calc. For some reason there is this stigma around calc II and III as if theyre impossible though. In reality, it’s just a bunch of other things to memorize and apply.

If you are confident that you can succeed in calc II, take it. Don’t think that adcoms will be impressed that you took it instead of stat however. At the end of the day – as sad as it is – go with the class you can get the best grade in.

On a personal note, I highly recommend taking statistics. The impact it had on my general decision making processes was tremendous.

D. has checked with some Med. Schools, they said that her AP Calc credit + college Stats will be OK. So, I asume that Calc I in combo with either Calc II or Stats is OK. D. does not plan to apply to Harvard and such though. Maybe it is a good idea to check with schools that you are planning to apply. D’s opinion is that Stats are much more useful. She said that her Med. Lab. Research experience makes much more sense to her after taking Stats.

Ok, never mind. I just assumed because my school’s premed program requires Calc A and Calc B that it was a prereq or something.
