Is it all in the name?

<p>I was racking my brain trying to think of public universities with the word State in their name that are thought to be as highly ranked as their in-state University counterparts.</p>

<p>For instance Michigan Vs. Michigan State. Washington Vs. Washington State.
The only exception that I can think of is THE Ohio State University.</p>

<p>Maybe the STATE schools all need to take heed. THE Washington State University.</p>

<p>Any thoughts on why this disparity exists.</p>
