i'm kind of confused about them, because some people look at them like they don't really mean anything.

my first year in college i plan on just going into general studies, but as of now it looks like i'd like to pursue magazine journalism, so would a liberal arts school like University of Chicago or Columbia University of Chicago be a good or bad choice??

No, it's not bad to go to a liberal arts school. Every university basically has a liberal arts school because it's the foundation- you have everything from math to english to art history at LAC. Unless you're looking for a specialized school such as engineering or nursing, a LAC is fine.

Especially schools like U of C or Columbia... which by the way, aren't strictly liberal arts schools.

yes it does have journalism, that's why i'm considering it.

my mind is like going crazy because all of the schools in chicago people are raving about don't offer journalism as a major. like i said, i plan on going into general studies anyways my first year so i'm not sure if it really matters.

besides northwestern, which i know i don't have a chance getting into, the three schools i'm looking at offering journalism people are telling me to stay away from :)

it sucks because i really want to go to chicago but these schools just aren't matching up right as far as what i want :(

I am by no means an expert but as far as i know i thought journalists didnt HAVE to have a degree in Journalism, you could do an area that interests you or do an apprenticeship (one of my best friends is doing one in Pre Press and works for magazines). I dont know if these are offerd in the states or not.

If you want schools in chicago that are not extremely tough to get into Depaul has communications which you could possibly link into your area of interest.

A lot of actual journalists say that a degree in English, philosophy, history, econ, or poli-sci is better preparation for journalism than is a degree in journalism. You can learn the "craft" of journalism on the job, but the insights the other majors will give you would be tougher to develop on your own.

Journalism isn't exactly a popular LAC degree... I'd go to a university like Northwestern or Syracuse if you have your hear set on Jounalism. If you go to a LAC consider English or something because LAC's are generally stronger and more respected for their liberal arts subjects- which is the reason most people choose them.

really? wow i really feel dumb here now because i thought journalism was basically what liberal arts was! guess not...

btw i took a double take when i saw your username because that's what my family calls me with the same spelling! actually it was a nickname i gave myself in 6th grade and unfortunately everyone thought it was funny and refuses to give it up...and i hate it ;)
