In my common app essay I used the prompt about my life story. Part of that is the fact my family and I have really struggled financially. I think that has been a big part of my life, I'm just wondering if that would hurt my chance of admissions because they know I would need financial aid.

When applying to universities, you will never be judged on your background - including your financial status. Discussing your struggles and how you overcome them is a big part in what the admissions office likes to see. If they can see that you are willing to put in hard work during hard times, that to me sounds like a scenario in college. If this is a big part of your life, make sure you are able to explain why this is so significant and how it had defined who you are.
