Hi! I will be attending Howard University in the fall, but I really don't like their study abroad programs! Some of them seem like glorified tours and the others are in places that I am not interested in going. However, Howard is giving me a full scholarship, so I'm going :)
Still, study abroad is extremely important to me and I would like to participate in another schools program. In your experience, is it common for schools to allow this? I plan on asking this question when I meet with someone, but I would like some insight into some other experiences as well. thank you!

Why not email Howard’s study abroad department to get the official line on it?

I’m going to schedule a meeting with the school of arts and sciences (who will be able to answer all my questions) after I complete my medical forms. I mostly posted this question in order to get some insight into how hard getting this done might be, and how other students’ experiences with doing study abroad at different schools went for them. One of my concerns wad that going with a different university would be complicated and not worth the effort. I know it’ll be hard to get the whole picture just from Howard.

Howard seems to give you access to many different study abroad programs. If it’s like U of R, you should be able to use your scholarship $. You’ll just need to pay the airfare. My D did IES in Paris, we just continued to pay U of R as normal, and her scholarship was the same as if she were on campus. All her courses were in
French (her choice), so it definitely was not just tourism. She lived with a host family, and loved it.

It doesn’t appear that you’d need to “go through another school.” Check with the study abroad program at Howard:

Thank you very much sopranomom92! The website that I saw was so completely different, but these options are really awesome, and I see a lot that I am interested in. Which is good, because I really didn’t want to do another program or have to pay for it :). Thanks again!
