Is it common that some premed students just cant get into med school no matter how many times they try? Are their some premed students that are jus stuck after college?

About half (slightly more) of the premedical students in any given year are denied admittance to medical school. As you can tell, many premeds continue graduating from college, and so there are, yes, many premeds who are never admitted to medical school.

so what happens if you never get admitted to med school?

you try again after a year or you apply to other professional schools that are supposedly easier to get into but then again you can't fall back on something like dentistry cause the adcoms would obviously see that you didn't show a long time interest in it and plus its about as competitive as med school

or you could try to go into a research career in one of the sciences if that's your major

people get lab jobs, work as drug reps, all sorts of things.

are careers in sports medicine part of the career choices in med school?

I don't understand your question.

I think you might be asking: "If I want to be a sports doctor, do I have to go to medical school?", in which case the answer is yes.

Obviously sports medicine, like any other kind of medicine, has a broad support staff - physical therapists and such. For these, obviously, you do not need to go to medical school.

What kind of fields in sports medicine will be there for me to choose if I go on to med school?

bumpppppppppp

ok, well i dont think the first guy correctly answered your question...it all depends on your grades. I dont think its accurate to say that no matter how hard you try you cant get into medical school.

If you try hard and come out with a 3.6+ or to be on the safe side a 3.8 and a strong MCAT score (about 9 or higher per section) you will get into at least 1 medical school, MAYBE...now that medical school may be a no namer or something, but hey its a med school.

Now this whole 50% thing is true, im not gonna deny that, but you have to remember you have thooousands upon thousands of students applying to medical school despite their grades. They may have a 3.3 and say what the hell...lemme give it a shot. These kids will probably get rejected on their scores alone.

Now as you get to the upper tier med schools such as ivies, mt sinai, washington in st louid...etc, that if you have anything less then a 4.0 and a 30, you are automatically booted from the pool...thats how many competitive applicants there are to these schools. Then if you have the scores, then it comes down to your other stuff...classes, EC's, interviews, etc.

But alot of the time, many kids apply to the wrong schools and they get rejected because they dont have the scores for the schools they apply to.

Im a strong believer that getting into medical school is about 3 things...1-working hard 2-getting the scores 3-applying to right schools (for instance, dont apply to mt sinai with a 3.3 and 26 MCAT...you arent getting in)

so dont look at that 50% national acceptance rate as meaning that everyone applying to medical school is qualified and that no matter wut 50% of these qualified applicants get rejected...thats just not the case, you have a mix of all different scores applying for a very small amount of spots...bottom line, get the scores, work hard...you will get in

idk if my point was clear, so just consider this...i dont have a number for you because i dont remember it...but try to find the acceptance rate of applicants who have 3.6 and higher with a 27 or higher on their MCATs...its not 50%

but then again, u have to remember that nothing is a guarentee...you may be the perfect student and get rejected for some reason...but getting good scores will def boost your chances, you can make it somehow

thanks for the info doogie311, do you know what kind of fields in sports medicine will be there for me to choose if I go on to med school?

well unless you are lucky and get onto a professional team...i think its mostly private practices

I know orthpaedic surgery is in sports medicine, but are there any other career choices in sports medicine that i can pick in med school that does not have to do with surgery?

get to med school first lol

well i dont know if i wanna go to med school or even try to if i dont know the careers I can choose in sports medicine.

how old are you right now

17......................

ok, you cant make a decision about whether or not you wanna go to medical school because of 1 specialty right now, you have so much to experience. You havent even gone to college yet...see whats out there, there is no reason to decide about medical school at this moment in your life...one step at a time.

Either way browse studentdocternetwork a little, that'll shock you. People have great Ec's, great grades, great MCAT's but dont get in. The truth is, its a crapshoot. Its like the lotto, you win or you lose. The more you look into it the more you see luck of the draw is the case. Some people with mediocre stats get in, while some with high don't. Others times its the other way around. Who knows what med schools want, it doesn't seem they even know.
