Is it even possible to do Biochem + BFA (painting/drawing)...

Hey guys
So is it possible to do these two degrees? (at the same time)...I really love both subjects but I've never heard of this double major combo..

Yes and No.

When I say yes, you can do anything you want in college, as long as the policy ALLOWS you. Consider painting and drawing is more like an art desgin major, I am sure this is not new.

The problem is class registration. There could be time conflict for one or more courses, and at least one of them could be a co-requisite for the other courses. Let say Course A is a co-requisite for Course B and C, and without Course A you cannot take B and C.
However, Course D ends after the first 40 minutes of Course A. So either you take Course D and sacrifice the rest, or you don’t take Course D now.

Sometime it gets even worse when Course ABC for Major 1, and Course DEF for Major 2, without taking Course D you can’t take EF, but Course D is only offered in the Fall. There is no Course D in Spring. You must finish D in order to take E & F. So you are 2 semesters late for Major 2. Then you will not be able to graduate within four years, if time really matters.

So first ask yourself is time a problem, allowing summer class and possible a 5th or 6th semesters? Then look at the two programs, how can you construct them well? Talk to your advisors. I am sure a lot people who did double or even sometime triple can graduate within four years.

:)

My brain…is melting. Haha lol…thanks so much though! I think I’m willing to do summer sessions and whatnot…

If your school is generous with AP credit and you have some, it will be easier. Often unrelated majors require a dual degree because there is little overlap in requirements. My guess would be that the two majors you are investigating will have lots of lab time and that can be a problem.

Sometimes, a minor will give you what you really want, which is more like a concentration so you can explore interests. Start out with the goal of a double/dual major and see how doable it is.

Ok, that might also work, I wouldn’t mind a minor

My school, Carnegie Mellon, has a program called BSA - Bachelor of Science and Art. It’s for people just like you, who would like to pursue degrees in both areas. There may be a few other schools with similar programs. Definitely look into it!

Whoa! Thats exactly what um looking for! Thanks so much! :)
