I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA with all AP/honors courses. This year they were unable to fit all of the 6 AP/honors classes in multiple peoples’ schedules due to conflicting classes. After an extensive discussion with the principal, he decided to allow me to take the AP Stats course on a verified online program and the grade on the online class would contribute to my GPA as honors credit. However, this means that, in order to take six classes at the school, I will have to take a cp class. Doesn’t this mean that my unweighted GPA will drop? Hypothetically, compare student A who has six AP classes with straight A’s, and student B who has six AP classes and an extra cp class with straight A’s. Technically, student B will get a lower weighted score even though the cp class is an extra class. Personally, I feel this is slightly unfair, any thoughts?
You would have a lower weighted GPA, but unless you are aiming for valedictorian, I don’t see why the tiniest difference in weighted GPA matrers.
If those are the rules, then they’re the rules. You have choices; you’ll have to decide on your priorities.
Selective colleges don’t care. They use unweighted GPA anyway. Good for you for taking an extra class - make it a fun one.
yes, its pretty dumb
No. If you get 6 A’s, it’s still a 4.0 UW. It will have an effect on your weighted GPA though.
Hypothetically, yes. But based on the below statement, that’s not the case
So a lot of people are in the same boat as you.
Bottom line, the impact of one CP class on a 3.5 year GPA is akin to a pimple on an elephant’s butt. Additionally, Course conflicts happen all the time, and AO’s know this. While your GC can certainly explain this in the Secondary School Report, this is really a tempest in a teapot.
OH NO I HAVE TO TAKE A CLASS. Take a fun class and learn something new. Top GPA is not the most important thing…you just want to be up there.
