After doing some thinking this summer, I have decided that I will enter BC as a prospective econ major in the college of arts and sciences. Given that I will not be in CSOM, is there still a possibility that I could land a business oriented internship after my first year of college? I know that it may be way to early to think about these types of things, but I would be very grateful if I could get a current student’s perspective on this type of situation.
A few years ago when we were attending Accepted Students Day, at the CSOM Q&A someone asked your exact question. An assistant dean of CSOM replied with the following:
She encouraged those with only one year of college to continue doing something interesting during the summer, (camp staff, travel, volunteer, etc). She said there are too many reports of college freshman not having rewarding summer experiences. And then she advocated waiting till after sophomore year to focus on an internship.
Accounting firms have internships for sophomores. Some finance firms have a small number of internships for sophomores as well. Junior year is the big year since those internships are often, in effect, 10 week interviews for a post-graduation position. As jpm50 quotes, do something interesting after freshman year. You’ll have plenty of time to work later in life!
