I am currently majoring in Civil Engineering and wanted to know if it is good to major in Civil Engineering. If so, why? Also, does a degree in Civil Engineering open the door to many other career fields in the math and sciences? What are the working conditions like? Stability, job growth, and pay?

I’m scratching my head thinking how to answer this. Like anything else in life, it’s all relative. What else are you considering majoring in?

If you must keep the question general, then I would say yes, civil engineering is a good major. It leads to a well paying field and it is not limited to certain parts of the country (or world). The field will continue to grow as long as we (the human race) continue to grow, because we all need homes to live in, factories and offices to work in, and places for entertainment. Of course, we also need the infrastructure to support all of this. Don’t forget that just like human beings, buildings and infrastructure have a finite lifespan as well (especially without renovations and maintenance).

What other career fields in the math and sciences are you referring to? Majoring in civil engineering does not lock you into working as a civil engineer. Off the top of my head, these are a few of the fields that I know fellow civil engineering grads have went into:

law school

business school

real estate development

project management

procurement

the closely related field of construction management

architecture

IT

facilities management

It really depends on the educational background that the career requires. If you want to go directly into chemical engineering after getting a civil engineering degree, it’s not going to happen.
