The OP’s point was that above $20,000 was too much, wasn’t it? Do how does 25k 3/4 of the way across the country help?

The OP and son have three viable options close to home that meet all of his admission requirements or most of them. I’m not sure he is even looking for additional options t this point.

$34,700 - $9,000 or $6000 is still higher than they wanted. :woman_shrugging:t3:

OP just needs to ensure they are comparing apples to apples.

If they want to include tuition, books, transportation and “other fees”, then they have to do that for all colleges. Playing football adds in “other fees” for shoes, etc. If one is going to include “gas” to get somewhere, then add that to all fees.

Agreed that airfare and such needs to be factored in to considerations. If hes playing football, OP likely needs to consider losing versus winning teams as well if that matters.

Nothing much to consider here.

For families with a lower EFC, UNM may provide extra aid for R&B and other expenses. When S20 was accepted last year, UNM’s final COA (money from my pocket) was among the lowest we received. They may not do it for all families but they were very generous to us. The COA was well under $10K.

Of course, travel costs would have still been a consideration. But, at the price UNM offered for Tuition+R&B, I could have afforded the travel if UNM had been the final choice.

Ohio is a good state to start a coaching career. Lots of high school and college teams. If I had a young man interested in coaching as a career I’d have Youngstown State on the list because Tressel is its current president and has great connections across the state. Ohio also has TAG coursework for efficient credit transfer between our state schools and most of the Ohio privates will also accept those courses. Department of Higher Education

…wrong post

I truly do hope your son finds a great solution for him.

You seem to have an issue with me so Im not going to fuel your hate fire anymore.

I was just pointing out that you have noted that $2k or so extra a year isn’t totally unreasonable or unreachable. I dont think a parents cost of driving to/from the college should be lumped into “college cost” (flying perhaps yes, but driving in state, no). I just didnt see having to possibly buy a car for the kid as a “college cost” either. Is it a cost? Yes. But my kids car is something they also work for and contribute to cost and that they can use after college as well.

OP just seemed to be throwing a bunch of numbers out there that people were confused about as they were adding in “extra costs” that others were not factoring in. Most people compare tuition/room and board and thats it. OP chose to throw in other factors such as car insurance and it was just unclear and unusual. Not saying its wrong to do that but thats why many people were confused. It also appeared that the mere suggestion of community college was offensive somehow.

We all agree college is really expensive and finances limits most kids school choices. We all love our kids and want the best for them but pocketbooks sadly make decisions for us sometimes.

I ran UNM and it was like 22K direct costs.

So far I have

Ursinus 26K pending an additional scholarship he applied for could get it down to 18K but highly unlikely.

Albright 18.8K

McDaniel 19.2K

Widener 26.7K but they are supposed to be re looking at my aid I filled out additional forms but it is still processing

Montclair 26K But he should qualify for additional 5K bringing it to 21K

Stockton 23K

Susquehanna?? Coach seemed to think they could get to <20K if we were representing his stats accurately. Just applied before holiday haven’t heard anything yet.

Wooster accepted with merit, no package yet but are gapped 32K at this point.

Excellent that there are already options on the table that affordable. Congrats to your son! Hope there will be good news from Susquehanna too.

I was thinking the same thing! Glad there are good options!

Because the topic of community college was brought up. That would involve some manner of getting there, no? Those are real direct costs involved in commuting.

Who was doing that? The student has to travel, no?

But you keep doing it. The person that said 2 years of CC at 3500 a semester would be 7K is speculating that I am not comparing apples to apples.

Well you would be wrong, I would only be incurring the cost if he commuted.

The thread has run its course. Closing
