I'm considering self studying and while there is a local community college that I could attend concurrently/high school course offering, I don't have an available means of transportation nor do I have enough room in my schedule for the course.
If I were to take the AP Exam and scored a 5, would I be able to get credit at a prestigious institution (NYU, Columbia, etc) and if not, how would I be able to get lab experience?

lab experience is completely supplemental for any AP

Each college has a different policy. Those with separate lab and lecture courses may only give lecture credit. If lab credit is required for a degree, you would have to take a lab course in college.
