Every semester is a new challenge. This semester(3rd), I am starting to feel like I dislike all my classes immensely. I am taking Calc III, a Materials Engineering course and 2 Industrial Engineering courses.

I remember my first semester, one of the professors, B.S in ME and Ph.D in IE, said openly that he hated some of his classes when he was an undergrad but just chose to keep going.

If I truly hated any of my classes, I probably would have changed majors by now, so I don't hate them, I just dislike them immensely.

I did a little experiment last semester. I took a SCM 301 class. A class in Supply Chain Management and I absolutely loved this class. It was not rocket science but I remember looking forward to being in class every M, W and F at 8 am because I enjoyed every minute of it. My grade was an A- with little effort.

Is it normal to dislike your classes immensely or am I in the wrong field? :)

Yeah man. I’m an 4th year undergrad IE almost halfway through my final semester, and I don’t think I’ve ever actually enjoyed any of my classes. I remember my third semester was one of my toughest. I was taking probability, computer graphics, materials science, physics 2 with lab, and linear algebra/differential equations. It was miserable and I ended up doing pretty poorly. Just hang in there and keep moving, no matter how much it sucks.

I am about 7 semesters in and I have really only “Hated” 1 or 2 classes. By hate all I really mean is I found them pretty uninteresting. This semester I have one…“Safety engineering”…their is nothing engineering about it, and all it is is a bunch of OSHA nonsense, May can’t come quick enough. But for the rest of the classes I have taken, even though some were immensely hard, I still found value in them.

Yeah, honestly, I agree with fractalmstr. There does always seem to be something with this path that is bothering you. Why don’t you give SCM a shot if you liked it alot? Nothing wrong with being more inclined to one field.

I’m going to agree with some of the pervious posters…With all the recent complaining maybe you’re in the wrong field or maybe you are just feeling a bit jaded?

While I am a sophomore by credits (first year student), I have not hated nor disliked a class immensely. There have been rough moments where I’ve rethought my career choice. There have been times when I just wanted to call it quits. What must be realized is that these moments come and go, and it is vital to pick yourself back up, dust yourself off, and get to pedaling on.

Perhaps you’re channeling your energy into the wrong things. Your frustration on a subject may end up being projected onto the class itself or the subject even. Find the root to your frustrations, gripes, and woes and acknowledge them. Don’t wake up and say “I hate this class” if you really don’t Be honest with yourself. You know you’re dreading the class because you don’t understand the current topic. ;)

Disliking ALL your classes isn’t a great start to your career. You should be learning things that will foster your 30+ year career. If you don’t like it now, how will you feel doing it for all those years? Note that I stressed ALL; it is normal to not like SOME of your classes but not ALL.

Why do you dislike your classes? Is it that you hate the material or you find it uninteresting? Do you just have boring professors? Do you feel like you’re not being challenged or do you feel overwhelmed with the workload? Do you just feel burnt out and can’t muster enthusiasm? Are you perhaps calling a feeling of apathy “intense dislike” because everyone else is talking about how much they love their classes?

I’m going to disagree with a lot of the previous posters, and say it doesn’t really matter. No one loves every single class they take. There are always some parts of your major that you like more than others, and as long as there’s something in it for you, then buckle down and just do it. I know many people who hated school, but then went on to love their job. In most cases, school is different than the work world. Perhaps, if you haven’t done so already, you could get a job or internship in your field to see if it’s the material that you don’t like or just the school environment. There were classes that I really didn’t like in college, and it had nothing to do with whether or not I enjoyed my future career. It’s fine. There are no rules about how much you have to like your classes, or whether you have to at all. Perhaps, you could try to take a more interesting class next semester, or do activities that you find really fun to keep your spirits up.

I would not change my major to SCM because it would be a waste of time. I looked at the 4 year plan and it is just too easy. I already have a B.S in Economics and it would be a waste of money.

What do I dislike about my classes? I am taking an Ergonomics class. Before I started, I was really interested in the subject and all.

First week of class, we started dealing with PERT diagrams, I mean, seriously people, if there are people out there who find PERT diagrams "fun and “interesting”, they are just weird! Even the professor says sometimes “Nobody likes doing these” LOL

I studied for Test #1 with a group and one of the questions was a PERT diagram, worth 35 points, no partial credit given, all of us ended up getting a low grade because of this one question.

Now we have moved on to Time Studies. If there are people out there who find Time Studies “fun” and “exciting”, they are just weird. The professor said “You will probably never do a time study as an Industrial Engineer” “People don’t like doing them” but you need to be able to tell if they are right or wrong.

I love IE when it comes to what is designed to do, improve and optimize a process. I can see how that is very useful and I love that aspect, I just don’t like the little details like doing all these stupid calculations to find the Average Time for a worker to complete a factory job. All you need is a tablet and some time study software

I’m a senior by credits and 3 semesters away from graduating. While I might dislike the class (poor professor, bad instructions, bad lectures, etc.) I can’t say I’ve hated the subject material. Sure, it might be dry and out of date, but the concepts behind the material are usually somewhat relevant and good to know. Once I can convince myself of the subject’s importance and relevancy, I’m usually ok with the class.

If people you trust in industry says that those classes don’t matter, just do your best in the class and move on to the more relevant classes.

It’s funny, they throw PERT in everything. I had them in my intro to engineering course 3 years ago, and then had them again in a graduate level operations research class last semester. They just require a bit of attention to detail, but they are really not hard at all.
