for short answer questions where they say that your comments should not exceed 150 words, is it okay if your response is like 180-190ish? i can't really cut down any more

If this is for an application, no.

yes it is for an application… commonapp e.c. short answer and on some supplements… really? how would the adcoms know if it was a little over though?

30 words over a 150 word limit is going 20% over the limit. 20% is pretty high.

I think it depends on the way the prompt is worded. For example, the CommonApp extracurricular prompt says “(150 words or fewer).” I wouldn’t go over that. It’s pretty explicit.

However one of my supplement essays says “We also suggest limiting your total response to 500 words.” I’d feel a little more comfortable going over that limit, although still not 20% over.

well that’s really frustrating… i feel like I can’t get my point across in less than 150

You might find it easier to cut down your answers if you put it aside for a day or two.
I agree with Erin’s Dad that you need to follow the word limits.

alright how about 165?

Its fine. They just dont want to have to read pages and pages of answers to a simple question.

165 is fine.

is 550 over ok for a 500 limit essay**?**

I like the 10% rule, so 550 words for a 500 word essay is fine.
