first off tell me do you want to sace $5000 or just earn 5000....
I mean this means that in your costs/Budget does you earning 5000 cover you living expenses or is the 5k just something extra which you have to have to pay through your EFC???

btw, the only co-ops i know of are 6-8 months long.

"and as for earning 8000-9000$ over the summer"
I never mentioned that amount...neither did i say that u can get it in one internship...If u get a good internship and also work during college on campus you can earn that much (simply earn...not save but earn...savings depend on how much you spend).....
Also i dont know about your place but over at my college...i spoke to 3 kids and all of them got an internship paying $15 or more (till$17) after freshman year...so thats like $6000-6800 per internship....so maybe u should find out some practical things yourself before dissuading people in entirety....

hmmm.. sezgikocak u are not the OP so whats your story why do u need so much money???

cuz i wanted to study in Gatech or UIUC but some of myfriends said me its impossible for you to join that colleges cuz your gpa 3.7(i'm from turkey)so i gave up and trying to think about private colleges for engineering majors.but i cant afford to that colleges cuz you have to pay average 35000$ per year.l(like Berkeley,U.Mic,Cal Ins.tech,cornell..)
i wanna help my parents and i'm trying to find more opportunities.

and the three kids u spoke to were american? they had homes in america?

ur gonna do a random a$$ internship (which im pretty sure are ridiculously difficult to find for freshmen) and live in an american city without a car food etc.... hmmmm doest seem to practical to me...

anyways come to america... you'll learn a lot about practical thinking.

^^ Dude an internship of $15 per/hr is the norm at the college i am talking abt specially in CS and yes the internationals live outside on rent (so $6k is what you earn, now once you spend on the neccesities the amount saved is much less) ....so i wasnt saying that you can save all that amount.....

sez..what gave you the idea that its easier to get into Berkeley and Caltech when you think you cant get through to Gatech and UIUC (btw getting into UIUC or Gatech is waay easier than getting into Cornell,Caltech or Berkeley)...
The average cost per year for the private colleges is close to $47k an year not 35k.....35k is the cost for most state universities....
And whoever said that u can get into Gatech or UIUC with a 3.7 GPA is just trying to fool you...GPA isnt the only criteria for admissions (and yours is reasonably good).....so its better if u speak to more knowledgable people in your country rather than some stupid friends...

well,thank you vampiro
