Is it posible for an int'l freshman to earn $5,000/yr, taking summer into account?

I live outside USA, so I really do not have an idea of what can be possible to earn there.
I will study in California and my college (Harvey Mudd) expects me to contribute with about $2,000 of work study. I suppose that that quantity can be achieved during the academic year.

Do you think it may be possible to earn besides the 2K, $3,000 more?

I will need them to complete the EFamilyContribution. In the summer.

I need a GOOD estimate. A conservative figure. Take into consideration all the restrictions internationals may have.

Thank you.

DEFINITELY possible. Jobs can easily get you $5,000 within a year and with summer especially. Very possible. =]

mafp345, u got in Harvey Mudd with financial aid?? R u an international student?

yes, it's definitely possible... with an average rate of 7 bucks / hr, you just need to work approximately 700 hours in a year to earn 5000 bucks. Assuming you work the max of 40hrs/week during 12 weeks of summer holidays, you will already clock 480 hours! (though, i'm afraid a huge part of it will go to pay for your additional charge for staying on campus during the hols)

just curious, how much aid (grants and loans) did hmc offer u?

hmc is bloody stingy.. how much did they offer?

but one of my friends said me you dont need to pay room if you work on campus in summer.its free.

but you do need to eat, right? And maybe you could spend some of the money you earn to actually have a life...once in a while go to a movie, or buy a book. So, you are bound to have expenses over the summer.

yes but if you really need money.you dont have to spend it.yes you will eat but you dont need to go to a movie,or drink bear or something.i can eat bread all day cuz i have to save 3000$ for my college tuition.

sezgikocak ... thats easier said then done...

i can do that.no problem for me.cuz i'm turkish ;)

oh i didnt know that ... lol j/k :)

It would be a great if you could find some on campus job (maybe at an academic dept, so you'd be doing something related to your major/courses), the pay rate is decent and the hours flexible, especially if you work with an academic dept. I would suggest not taking up any clerical jobs, they're mundane and tiring, and you don't learn much. Just be careful while taking up a job. Goodluck! :)

I would like to be sure about that

About How much did HMC gave me, i think you can guess it out. Lets say, it costs 46K per year, and I am having trouble trying to find $3,800 per year. How much do you think my parens would be able to pay.
Lets say they gave me a lot, but i expected more. I live in a country where the minimum salary is less than $1 per hour.

I had heard that internationals could not work off campus. and well I really have not heard that you can stay in the dorms for free. What is your source sezgikocak ?

intls mostly stay with the international house in holidays (provided you get the approval..which is not that difficult)
And you can clock i think abt $7000-8000 in california (after first year) if u find good internships...

if we are in a co-op program can we find any internship??(but excluding co-op session)

"if we are in a co-op program can we find any internship??(but excluding co-op session)"
First of all NO...
Are you going to college to study or Work
next if you want to make $5000 (just work 15hrs throughout school weeks, get an internship and spend only about $500 per term on yourself and watch it when you spend it) this can easily get you $5000..

internationals CANNOT WORK OFF CAMPUS FOR MORE THAN 12 MONTHS IN THE US.
u probably dont want to waste that time working a summer job(which will prbably be washing dishes/being a waiter).
and as for earning 8000-9000$ over the summer...as a freshman....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

either contact ur local USIS or go to a more informed forum...

the general calibre of information on CC has fallen so much since last year its appalling.

(paper due soon..terrible mood)

but vampiro in co-op session i work 4 months in a company.how can i work 15 hours in a week ??i m gonna study engineering.it must be hard to study your lessons with 15 hrs work after school, what do you think ?
