I have planned out and it is possible to double major in time. But, I also have to work to maintain myself since no one is going to be helping me when I go to college. My question is, is it possible for me to double major, work 10-15 hours per week, and have a social life while being able to graduate on time? If not, what are other alternatives that I have? Can anyone give me tips on how they balanced their work/life?
Just major in one thing, study hard, do well. The current mania for double majoring really throws kids off thinking they HAVE to do two majors (plus everything else). Many kids have to work-- that’s reality, so don’t apologize for that.
Your best “alternative” is to major in one thing and graduate with a degree!
In most cases, there is little added value for two majors over one major plus out-of-major electives in the second area of academic interest. Indeed, when doing the latter, you can choose just the most interesting courses in the second area, rather than having to take those that are less interesting to you to fulfill all of the check boxes for a major.
Agree with both responses above.
There is so real advantage to double majoring in the eyes of employers. Frankly, you’ll be a better employee if you maintain a good work/ social life balance. Especially if you have no outside support and want to graduate on time.
- It is more important to do well in your classes than to double major.
- Realize that college expect you do 2-3 hours of studying/writing/reading/homework for every hour in class.
- If you work, it should be 10-15 hours like you said.
- Then think about fitting in socializing.
- Double majoring should be your lowest priority.
