If PLUS loans are included, can I accept it by myself?
If it is usually not done without parents, are schools flexible for negotiation?

Or is it a federal law or something?

PLUS loans are parent loans. You can accept the package but your parents would have to go through the application process and credit checks to actually get the PLUS loans which would then be in their name. (just like you will have to complete some forms to actually get the student Stafford loan).

There is no negotiation with the schools. A PLUS loan is a parent loan (except for grad students) and is bound by federal rules.

You can accept everything on your behalf, and return… or accept a few on your behalf and return. Though when bills are due you are entitled to pay the school your total amount for attending, whether it varies by semester, year etc…

Yes, you can accept or decline any portion of your financial aid package, but the PLUS is a parent loan and they will need to go through the process and the credit check. If they don’t complete it then what Coolbreeze says is true, the amount that would have come from the PLUS loan will be due and payable at the start of the semester or throughout the payment plan.

Antonio…

which school is this for?

Did you apply and/or get accepted to any schools that meet need? Are most of your schools OOS publics???

What schools and FA packages have you rec’d so far? Which ones are you still waiting on?

antonioray: I have to say…you have started some interesting (but often sad) threads on this forum.

I hope you figure out a way to get your college costs paid.

antonioray, do not even consider falsifying a PLUS application … I am not saying that I think you will, I am just warning you in case you might consider it. One of your parents must be the applicant, and you absolutely should not apply “for” them. I do see students do this, and they do get caught.

You are clearly struggling with your “what if’s” to the point where you are becoming consumed by them. My advice to you is to re-read the advice you have received so far. Read it AGAIN. Understand that there are some regulations that cannot be changed, no matter how much you wish they could be. Understand also that if your situation changes for the worse at some point in the future, you will just have to figure out what to do at that point. Unless & until things reach the point you worry about, you are making yourself crazy … and no one can help you with “maybe’s.” In the meantime, go with what seems best now given your circumstances.

If you need more advice, post again … but try to explain what is going on now & what information you need now.
