I’m interested in having a major in English and minor in a science, which seems like a huge jump subject-wise. I also think I’m going to change my major at some point in college to computer science and make my minor English. Is this possible, both having a major and minor that are this different and changing my major and minor like this?
Depends on the school. At most privates, it’s not difficult at all.
At publics, getting in to the CS department may or may not be difficult.
If CS is engineering-based, it may have a number of additional (math, science, and engineering) requirements that may make it more difficult to fit a second major around. If CS is in an arts and sciences division, then careful planning should allow you to fit and English major alongside, although you may just want to choose as electives the most interesting English courses rather than try to check the boxes for the second major.
Changing into CS may be difficult if the major is already filled to capacity (due to its popularity). You also need to have been taking the needed CS and math courses before deciding to change into the CS major – if not, then changing into it late may delay graduation due to having to take sequences of prerequisites.
