Is it possible to get a job outside of your major?

I was wondering if I can get a job that deals with psychology or some other field if I get a degree in creative writing? I’m planning on doing research and and internships for my creative writing major and psychology minor (I don’t think I can efficiently handle a double major) and I was wondering if having research experience in a minor could potentially get me a job that deals with it (also planning on taking classes like communication and computer science to have basic knowledge that could support my minor and major)? Thanks!

Depends on the job. Some jobs or credentials for jobs do require specific skills or major accreditation associated with specific majors (e.g. engineering, architecture, accounting).

But other jobs are major agnostic, including many general business jobs. However, general skills and knowledge, such as in writing and communication about various subjects, statistics, social sciences, and computing, may be helpful in a wide range of jobs. Choosing breadth and free electives in college carefully may help you in learning such things.

Absolutely, but as @ucbalumnus said, it depends on the job. For psychology, working with humans will require more than a minor in the subject- it will require specific training no matter what level (even as a aide in a mental health facility).

Are you actually in college now, or is this planning for the future?

Thanks guys for the info! I have just started college but I really feel like 2 majors will be too much for me to handle. I I was just wondering if creative writing and psychology is a good combo because most of the classes required for these two fields do not overlap.

It might work if your goal is to write fiction that involves psychology or psychological aspects. If you want to work with patients, you would need at least a masters in psychology.
