Is it possible to major in Engineering AND minor in Chinese?

My incoming freshman has accepted the Presidential and Engineering Scholarships. He is scheduled for the 5/31 Bama Bound. His primary interest is Physics however his AP Physics teacher suggested he follow the Engineering College’s curriculum his first year since it is very similar the Physics major in the College of Arts and Sciences. He likes that plan since he knows very little about the many career opportunities in Engineering.

Can a General Engineering student also find time in his first year schedule to minor in Chinese? He really wants to take Chinese his first year rather than wait to take until sophomore year.

He has already completed AP Chem (Junior Year) and will complete AP Calculus and AP Physics. He participated in a 4 week (full day) Chinese Academy at the the Ohio State University between Sophomore and Junior year. He could get college credit for
Chinese 101 but since it has been a while since he participated in the program, he will start with the first Chinese class at UA. Chinese was not offered at his high school. He will graduate with four years of German. Even though he is the top German student in his Honors 4 class, he does not plan on taking it in college. Can he still take the German placement test for possible college language credit if he scores well? (The AP German test is not available at our school.)

Placement test don’t give you credit, only placement (hence the name). An AP German test maybe taken at another school or you could arrange for your school to give just your son the test, but I’m thinking it’s well past the deadline to arrange either option. Another option would be to take the CLEP test in German.

So, your son can earn up to 14 hours and his humanities credit in Engineering (remember that engineering has a different core curriculum than the rest of the university) by scoring high enough on the CLEP.

You can take a minor in any other college while majoring in Engineering. If your son is not going to have to take calculus or chemistry his first semester, he should have plenty of time to fit in a Chinese course. (Engineering majors typically don’t take Physics until at least the spring semester of Freshman year).

My engineering son has 3 minors…math, chem, and bio, so it is possible. How many credits are reqd for chinese major.

Have your son take the placement for german and then take the class that he tests into to get those lower credits.

Is there a clep exam for german. If so, do that.
