is it possible to obtain a civilian job/internship at a military branch?

i'm not at an academy, but would still like to get involved without officially enlisting.
what are ways civilians can get involved, not necessarily applying for work/internships under their major?

i.e. clerical, volunteer, research

background: i applied to the AF academy as a high school senior and got in, but had to stay behind due to family issues. now i'm "making it up" by getting involved somehow.

Yeah, I believe you could either work for the Department of the insert branch here or get a job on the base, although in that case you’d probably be doing some menial work like flipping burgers or working at the PX.

[USAJOBS - Search Jobs](http://jobsearch.usajobs.gov/A9DeptAirForce.aspx)

They’re federal jobs though, meaning it’s pretty damn hard to get one.

Yes, it’s possible. There are civilian nurses that work at military bases.

The federal jobs are what you want. If you want an easy start try the commissary. It’s a GS level job. Once you’re in one, it will be easier to get other GS lvl jobs.

Why not do ROTC?

thanks everyone!

@ dchurricane:
i want to do rotc, but i don’t want to serve afterwards anymore. had i not had the family issues, i would** definitely** jump at the opportunity, but s*** happens, yknow?

and that’s ok, bc i’ve made the most out of the “regular” college experience by making it up with internships.

I worked for the Department of the Air Force 2 summers ago as a civilian summer clerk. USAjobs is definitely where to look!
