Hi everyone at CC,
I am wondering if you can self study apcs in 1 semester. I am currently using the Barrons book and Javanotes 7.0 version. Are these books effective or not?

no this is my first self study. I heard from many people it is not that hard, so I thought I might as well give it a shot. Right now I am taking AP World and AP Chinese, but I also want to take APCS.
Do you have any programming experience, particularly with Java?
unfortunately not.
You might be naturally gifted at coding or you might not. It’s really hard to just study Java in a semester unless you already had experience with another language. The test isn’t going to test you on facts you memorized. I’m taking this at school and we haven’t even gone through all the concepts needed to write the FRQs. I would say what you plan on doing is impossible, but you could prove me wrong. You would have to practice everyday and make projects that allow you to get better. I highly recommend you don’t self-study though. It won’t impress colleges and most won’t even accept the AP exam for credit. Why not learn Java or another language (python,html,javascript) for your own benefit instead? Knowing how to code is a very useful skill and could help you land certain jobs or even allow you to make your own business. Self-studying would be a waste of your time.
AP CS will be very difficult to self-study without an previous coding experience (I’m a CS major). I don’t recommend it.
AP CS would be difficult to self-study but I can assure you it’s not impossible. I was ready to take the test at the end of the first semester so it can certainly be done after 1 semester. I would suggest finding some sort of online course though.
I am currently in APCS (no previous coding experience) and I would advise against doing that; it is challenging and will probably be more so, especially without coding experience. APCS isn’t something you should self-study if you really want to learn how to code.
