Is it Possible to Take Geometry Over the Summer and Take Algebra 2 Next Year?

I’m currently a 9th grader with 8 days left of the school year. As a 9th grader I am taking Algebra 1 which about 60% of the people at my school take and another 35% take Geometry and 5% Other. I would love to take Geometry over some online summer course and go straight into Algebra II in 10th grade. I’ll start with some of my previous math history (5th grade +). In 5th grade I was placed in normal math, about a month into school I aced our first test and got a top 12% on my MAP math test. After they saw those results they quickly moved to the honors math class in 5th grade. Throughout the year I got an “A” on every test we took and got around the same score for the MAP test. Here comes 6th grade, the start of my middle school adventure. Me being clueless of how honor classes worked I just assumed I was in the honors math class. 6th grade goes by with me get a “A” in the normal math class and getting a top 5% on the MAP test. Once I got to 7th grade I realized I was never in the honors math for 6th grade, me being clueless though I didn’t know what to do and decided to do nothing. 7th and 8th grade go along with me getting an “A-” and “A” throughout the normal math classes. We no longer took map test starting in 7th grade and instead started taking MCA test. In 7th grade I got a top 11% on my MCA and a top 9% in 8th grade. Middle school is now over and I’m still clueless on the whole “Honors” and “Normal” math classes. I now start Algebra I as a 9th grader with the thought of “I should be in Geometry right now.” This thought got me quite depressed at the beginning of the school year but soon decided to stop caring after around the first two weeks. 1st tri goes by and I get a 96% in math (A). Second tri goes by and I end up slipping to the first B I’ve ever gotten in my past four years of math. Reason being for the B is a series of around three test all in the same month I got a F-C in. Now arrives third tri with me thinking that last tri was just a sign that I should start studying for my math test. With around 30 days left of school and about 60 days into third tri I have a 85% in math (B). This was the time that we were starting to make our schedules for next year, I started panicking because I really wanted to take Geometry over the summer and move onto the Honors class math in 10th grade. I felt to scared to talk with my math teacher and decided to talk to a counselor instead. I went to set up an appointment but they were all full for that week. They asked me why I wanted to talk to my counselor and I asked them if it was available to take a math course over the summer and move onto the next math level next year. They told me that this school didn’t offer that opportunity. I left the office with sadness. After around a week later I felt determined to take Geometry over the summer. They were now offering people to talk to the counselor at lunch. I hated this idea as I felt embarrassed to go up to them when they are in the middle of the lunchroom helping people. I stall till the last day and finally get the guts to go up there. I tell the counselor how I wanted to take Geometry over the summer and go into Algebra II next year. He pulled up my name and as soon as he saw I had a “B” in my current trimester he rejected the option. He told me that a few kids from our school have tried taking Geometry over the summer and no one has ever gotten a good grade from it, (Those kids got A’s). I was running out of time and felt pressured and just said “Ok” and left. I’ve looked up people who have taken Geometry over the summer and 90% of them say how it’s easy but requires dedication. I now have 8 days left of school and I’m panicking quite a bit. What should I do? I was thinking about going up to the office and asking if it’s possible to take a Geometry test at the end of summer and if I pass it I could move onto Algebra II in 10th grade. Hopefully someone will help me within the next 5 days.

P.S.
I know I went too much into detail with my previous math years as they most likely mean nothing now, but I just needed to get it off my back. I’m also sure I made some grammar errors throughout this but I’m tiered ok! :slight_smile:
Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help me.

Ask your GC. That is quite common in our school district though

What does “GC” mean? Grand Counselor?

GC = Guidance Counselor

It is very common in our district also. My daughter took Geometry last summer and was going to take Calculus this summer but will take Physics instead to free up time for another class she wants. Maybe your parents can back you up on this so you don’t feel so afraid.

There is nothing wrong with getting your parents to speak to your current math teacher for advice. That person would know better than your guidance counselor about your math abilities.
If you do take the geometry class this summer, you might have to take a placement test at your school in the fall to demonstrate that you know the material.

Algebra 2 isn’t necessarily reliant on taking Geometry. In other words, you don’t NEED to know geometry to take Algebra 2. If it’s not possible to do it in the summer, you could potentially take them both during your sophomore year (double up) if your school allows it. A friend of mine did that and now he’s taking AP Calculus BC next year.

In terms of knowledge, geometry is not a prefer for Algebra. However, it may be a required course sequence in the school district. Your Math teacher may know your ability, but your GC would know the school and district requirement and can direct you to the online or summer course that would be accepted by your school. Also, your GC would help you in class registration for next semester anyway.

Little confused, what’s the difference between a normal School Counselor and a Guidance Counselor?

Do you know if I will even be able to change my math class for next year? There’s only 7 days left of school and our schedules are suppose to be finalized by now.

I’m on the same boat as you, except I am in 8th grade and just now finishing algebra 1. I am also hoping to take geometry over the summer so I can get a head-start on everybody else (a majority of the people I know are taking algebra 1 in 8th, some taking geometry). But unlike you, I have fairly good grades in algebra (97 average right now, with an 80% final exam grade, which is pretty bad compared to my friends), but I’m not particularly confident in my abilities. So now I’m starting to question my decision to take geometry over the summer, and what’s even more daunting is that I have to take the SAT this Saturday…

How did it go, Could you update us. I’m in 8th grade taking Algebra 1 but would like to take geometry over the summer so I could potentially take ap calculus BC in senior year to get into a great school. This info would really help us out, Thanks.
