I'm a rising senior interested in various combined degree programs and I was wondering if I started to shadow now, is it too late? I am confident that I want to become a doctor, however, I think I need more ECs related to the medical profession, the only thing I have is 100+ hours in hospital volunteering (ER and orthopedics). Oh and there was this one day where I had the op to talk to a Pediatrician from the ER. She gave us advice and allowed us to ask her numerous questions, but I don't really think that that qualifies.

And btw can anyone reference a doctor who has allowed high school students to shadow him/her in NJ? (I'm finding it extremely difficult to find one).

a shadowing actually being the person in a given profession for a day. in your case, shadowing a doctor would mean being with your doctor the minute you step into his/her office to when his/her office closes. during this time, you would ask questions, and make notes.

make sure you show interest. ask questions, and dress appropriately. engage with the doctor, and dont disturb his "flow of traffic", which means dont get in his way. also, leave with the doctor's respect, and keep in contact in case of any letters of recommendation opportunities arise.

to be blunt, shadowing in high school will mean basically nothing for med school admissions (unless you continue to shadow that same doctor from high school all through undergrad, which is unlikely).
