Is it worth asking for soft support?

I scored 35 on the ACT (36 super scored) and 36 on the math section. I have a near 4.0 UW GPA on the highest possible course rigor at my school. I’ll update things later after decisions to let you know how things played out! Thanks for the help everyone…

Can you share your sport?

Yes, please do update as it would be helpful for future recruits.

I can’t recall if this was mentioned upthread but I’d make sure to stay in touch with the MIT coach and let them know you’re still interested. (I assume you’re doing that but mention it in case you assume they know that; they don’t know unless you tell them).

Best of luck to you - great testing stats and your profile seems solid, so maybe things will work out in RD round if the fit is right, word is that some “recruits” do get in later, fingers crossed for you!

That is probably true for most sports at most Ivies, but isn’t universal.

From the Harvard lawsuit it appears to help there at least a bit. And I know of at least 1 non-Harvard coach who said it helps, a recruit who was academically qualified to get in without help but that didn’t get a slot was told soft support probably bumped his odds to 50/50. Not something to count on certainly, especially since to get that bump you can probably get an actual slot at a high academic D3 (in my opinion the smarter choice in that circumstance). But a bump to 50/50 is certainly a big change to the chances that athlete had pre-bump.

My info is second hand, but direct from the parent of the athlete. I was surprised tbh, because imho that violates the spirit, and probably the letter, of the rule Ivies have about the number of supported athletes.

I don’t agree. If the student is academically qualified it is just a tie breaker like legacy for example. It probably ensures it gets a second read or something of the sort. At the end of the day this will be a very qualified student with an impressive EC commitment and achievement.

I’m not saying to not take advantage of it. We don’t create the system, and we should try to use it to our best advantage. That’s why most of us are probably on this board. If that is what you want, absolutely take advantage of any bump you can get.

I just think if you have a rule that you can only recruit 100 kids, (I know that’s the wrong number) then either stick to it, or do it like NESCAC schools where there are slots and tips. From what I have seen the Ivies instead say it’s absolutely not allowed. Wink wink nudge nudge. That’s what I think is kind of shady.

I understand what you are saying but I guess the way I look at it is that beyond the slots it just becomes a matter of fulfilling institutional needs. It is no different from the tuba player that was brought up by the orchestra director or whatever. This is not a student who is getting a slight pass on academics (that is the purpose of the slot IMO). And the risk is 100% on the athlete, who at this level almost certainly gave up the sure thing somewhere else.
