Is it worth being almost $60,000 in debt after college?

Hi everyone.

The school I want to attend is about $26,000 a year and they're giving me about $12,000. So out of pocket, I would have to pay $14,000. My parents are not willing to help me pay the loans. This is the only school that is in state that I want to attend. I currently plan on majoring in mass communications with a minor in psychology. My major may change to possibly psychology. I'm really worried that if I go into that much debt, I won't be able to find a job in the current state of our economy. Right now, I think that going to community college is the best option as much as I don't want to go. If anyone can give me some in sight it'll really help.

You are thinking the right way. Not only is $60K too much debt, you can’t take out that much in loans anyway – the Stafford Loan limit ($5500 as a freshman) is the max.

Will your family be able to help with college costs at all?

You’ll never find job in psychology having only Bachelor degree.

Will you have the money for a four year college after you get your AA? Will your parents help you out then, or will you have to work your way through school somehow? If its the latter, you may have to forgo those majors, and find one where you can make some money. It sounds like you need to it down with a counselor and your parents and gather a practical plan.

Since your parents can’t help you with school costs, you might want to consider either attending a state college that you can commute to or attending your local community college for two years and then transferring to the school you are considering to finish up your degree. $60K in loans (even if you could get them) is way too much. Best wishes.
