Is It Worth Double-majoring?!

Hey everyone... i will attend a liberal arts university and i am wondering if it is worth double-majoring...i am noticing that doublemajor has a lot of dissadvantages. besides the intensive and difficulties of courses, it does not allow you to choose many courses. i was thinking to double major in eco and cs, and in my final year i want to take a couple of elective but very important courses in eco and cs but which is impossible because i have no space available because of the double-major and some obligatory but non-related to the major courses... so what do you advice me to do: double-major whith the least required nr of courses for eco and cs, or to major in one of them with all the best courses and minor in the other one... ah yeah also tell me what do grad school consider the most, exellent scores in two majors whith normal courses, or exellent scores in one major but with very difficult courses.. please give me an opinion... thanks

I think double majoring in CS and Economics is great for job prospects.. I would have gone for it, but if you really want to take more courses.. then u can spend another term or so .. .but CS + Eco is HOT!

waleed, can you back up your job prospects comment? Could you be more specific? I am thinking of double majoring in CS and Econ, as well, but I don't really know if this is better than majoring in math and econ.

economics and Computer science go hand in hand because both economic models and regressions etc are all done through computers so if someone has a CS background, he can really be at the forefront of economic research. Plus, CS + MBA are also really good because managers that have the tech sense get better jobs.. atleast thats what I have seen

I would personally put Econ and Math (what I'm doing) and CS and Econ on the same level. What career path are you looking at, Olsi? Do you plan to go to grad school or work after undergrad? Its really a good idea to have a rough plan in your mind so you dont end up taking courses for the sake of it, if you have a passion for something, go for it. Don't do things for money/jobs.. you'll regret it down the line... Just my 2 cents. :)

i have a wierd passion for CS, and i have chosen to major in eco too because of the job opportunity it offers, btw my greatest passion is math but i think i culdnt even get a job if i graduate in math...

First off which school are you going to....
Next if Ibanks (the highest paying jobs) recruit at your school...you'll be surprised to see how many Maths majors they are intertsted to take (not purely math majors...but yeah ones good in Math Courses with some other major also)...
I think Comp Sci + ECO or Comp Sci. + Math...both are good options for you career wise...

ibanks pay well. you trade your life for pay, though :)
are you a prefrosh? you've plenty of time to make a decision.. but make sure you know what you want to do with your time.

I banking does involve a lot of work...but then you cant really expect anyone to hand you down millions of $$ for just sitting around....
anyways even leaving out ibanks i still feel that Comp Sci. +econ or math is a good option for future career prospects (especially the math one for research).....
But this advice just tells you that these are great double major options so as Laila said you have to make a decision whether you want to do it or not....its not about whether the D Major is good but about Do/Can you handle it....

ibanking involves a hell lot of work, sure. my point is very few people have a passion for monotonous work though... plus, different people have different priorities :)

could someone tell me what type of jobs economics majors get?

there's two options: work, or grad school.
if you choose to work : private sector stuff would mostly involve banking and corporate finance... public, probably more on UN side..stuff like world bank n such. but then again, you dont need to be an econ major to excel at these.. you can always get an MBA and join Fidelity :-/

see waleed Eco is a very vast field....with it you mostly go into Finance....economists go into market research, i banking, Corprate Finance and likes....its hard to put down all the career paths available but i think these are the major ones.....

I have an advice for you all prefroshes. Before choosing econ as a major think about what you actually want from that field. Are you in it for the money? Or are you in it for some inexplicable passion? As Laila said, do what you like, because in the end you will be better off.

vampiro, what do u plan to pursue at WPI?

i will major in CS and a minor (in ECE or Maths) or maybe a dual major...but apart from CS rest i will decide in my 2nd year....
