Hey guys
I really need to pump up my SAT grade over the summer
especially the Critical Reading section from low 600 to low700.

I've never really studied SAT before except that I went to an SAT prep for like 10days
and October is my last shot if I want to apply early next year, so I really want increase my score.

My mom got me a tutor, who is suppose to be really helpful and is kinda famous in "SAT Prep area"--according to my mother..., and it costs like a fortune!!!!!

I'm not sure if I should keep doing prep with the tutor because I'm not sure if I can learn much from her.

The reason I wanted a tutor was just to answer some questions I might have in CR, but that's about it. But this prep thing is SO expensive, that I'm not sure if it's worth it.

How do you guys self-study SAT? what do you guys do if you don't understand something?

Honestly, I think a tutor is worth it if you can afford it. My tutor helped me get my Critical Reading up from a 630 to a 710. But if you can’t afford it I’m pretty sure you can get to the low 700s by yourself…

definitely not worth it, after taking SAT Prep my SAT score actually got worse from the PSAT’s, then I started using the big blue Official SAT book to study, and the third time I took the SAT I improved my overall score by 280 points, went from an 1810 to a 2090, so just study yourself and don’t waste your money

I would only recommend using a tutor for the essay since that really can’t be done by self-studying. Any questions you have you can find online or even post on CC. With so many resources there really is no need to spend so much money for nothing. And since most of your areas of aid pertain to CR, I doubt a tutor would help that much.

When it came to improving my critical reading score through self studying (I was able to improve from high 500’s to low 700s) I basically read a lot of boring novels to bring my resilience when reading SAT CR passages, since they typically bore me to death. Then after that I reasoned out all the questions by using a certain underlying thinking method popularly advocated by “Mystery Tutor”. Google it under videos and it should be the second link. It really helped me a lot. Anyways good luck!
