Is it worth it for me to even apply to UCLA OOS? (financial situation in description)

Okay, so I think I have a decent shot of getting in (GPA avg at my school is lower than my current GPA after junior year, and I can still raise it even more after 1st semester senior year). Also my ECs are pretty good but this is all beside the point

I live on the east coast, and I will have to pay OOS, obviously. However, my parents work at Georgetown, and Georgetown can cover at least 2/3 of my tuition for any university I decide to attend. I calculated all the expenses if I go to UCLA, including books, cost of living, etc., which totaled out to be 30-35k. for someone living in a household with a 75k income, is 30-35k a year a lot compared to schools like Boston, BC, emory, and others? Is it even worth applying to this school? (I really do like the school btw, so its not like im just applying randomnly)

Can your parents pay $35,000 a year for you to attend college?

You need to ask your parents that question. My guess is that your parents cannot afford to pay it. There is no financial aid for OOS students at UCLA!!! And no you cannot borrow that much.

So Georgetown University will pay 2/3 tuition for staff employees at another university?

Why not go to Georgetown?

Also, georgetown’s offer cannot be combined with any financial aid offer

@thumper1 im not really sure, thats why im asking you guys! does 35k seem reasonable for a family w/a household income of 75k?

Are you saying that G’town will pay 2/3 tuition at ANY school that you attend??

How much will your parents pay each year? Ask them!

With room and board, etc., 1/3 of Georgetown and UCLA might end up being the same, at 35k.

@mom2collegekids yes, sorry guys, georgetown will pay for any university I attend

@TomSrOfBoston and I don’t have the stats to get in to georgetown haha

@sunshine232 well, yes if I get no financial aid. I think if I go to georgetown (which I wont) I would get even better aid though than 30k…b/c of my lowish income and the fact that my parents work there

Do,your parents have any college savings for you? If they earn $75,000 a year, and you want them to pay $35,000 a year for your college…that cluld be half of their take home pay.

@thumper1 yeah…I definitely wouldn’t want to put all that burden on my parents and I wouldn’t expect them to pay for all of it. I would probably get a loan or pay back my expenses when I have my own job which isn’t a problem if I don’t have to pay back that much haha

by the way, if I go to any other school then I can have the option of either taking the georgetown deal or just relying on fin aid (fin aid will most likely happen)

You can take a $5500 loan your fresh,an YEAR. Anything higher than that will need to either be cosigned by your parents…or they will need to take the loan. Will they do that?

I would suggest you cast a broad net. Find some schools where your tuition deal would leave you with a lower net cost. Where do you reside? VA. MD. DC?

What instate options do,you have.

I think you need to have a college money talk with your parents. You have a generous tuition thing from Georgetown that you can use. Find out what your parents can reasonably pay.

@thumper1 okay ill do that. i live in VA, and the only in state im applying to is GMU

they said I could apply to ucla, but idk if they know how expensive it is…they probably do

If your parent has worked for GTown for 5 years or more, this is your benefit…

Up to $8,244.72 per semester, or $5,496.48 per quarter. Benefit is limited to $16,489.44 per academic year.

GTown will pay about 16,500 per year. That isn’t 2/3 of any university. That isn’t even half of many universities.

COA at UCLA for OOS is $60,729/year. Less 16,489 equals $44240 per year, not $35,000 and there is no financial aid!

Do,you have the stats to get accepted to UCLA?

UVA meets full need for all accepted students. With $75,000 income, you might get enough need based aid to make the school affordable.

Why GMU? What about the other VA schools. How about JMU?

@mom2collegekids @TomSrOfBoston my dad has been working there for 15+ years and he told me 2/3 of the tuition, I can ask him again tho he just told me that this afternoon

It may be 2/3 tuition up to the max that was posted earlier. Go to the Georgetown website and look it up.

as @mom2collegekids stated.

One skill to learn for college is the ability to research information on your own.

@thumper1 the average gpa and sat score accepted at my school is a 3.73 W and 1230, respectively. My gpa is 3.77 W (about to be a 3.95 by the end of 1st semester senior year) and a 1300 (taking the test again, practice tests have been above 1400 so far).

other virginia schools, like tech and jmu dont have ice rinks (I am a competitive figure skater, I wish vt had one):), and my parents don’t want me to go/apply to VCU

I wouldn’t have a chance at UVA or WM based on my GPA, but I wouldn’t want to go to either school anyway (I heard UVA is sort of cliquey, like high school 2.0 and the people at WM seem so depressed there, plus its not really good for skating either)
