Is it worth it to take out loans?

It seems I've encountered a bit of a problem with my college search...

My parents and I have come to several agreements with what I want out of a college when I transfer but it seems that every single college we've looked at is too expensive for us to handle (my parents have been paying for my education thus far). My parents want to find a school that's under $20,000 a year but I can't find a single one that is so, even most state schools fall just above that mark. My parents said I could take out loans if I wanted to but they seem to be frowning upon it.

So my question really is should I take out loans to further my education? Is it really worth it?

It’s only worth it if the debt you’ll have once you graduate is under a certain number. A good rule is to not take out more loans than your expected starting salary. I don’t follow this rule. It’s really up to how much you’re comfortable with.

If you spend over 50,000 for a no name college, it’s not worth it. If it’s an ivy and you’re sure you can’t get an education that’s in the same ballpark for a cheaper price…maybe. Weigh your options. Look at which ones will leave you with the least amount of debt. Then see what feasible.

It depends on the kind of degree you’re getting if you’re not going anywhere super famous. It is worth it if it’s engineering (20K a year) but you should probably start off at community college first and work the entire time.

@CalDud The OP is already at a community college it sounds like, looking to transfer for last two years.

Anyway, this is my take… If you’ve already done the community college route, you already saved a ton of money right there. If there really isn’t any other 4 year (even state) that would be affordable for you, then I would take the loans for the most affordable school. That’s what I would do (and probably what I will have to do) haha. No sense in doing the CC and not transferring for your bachelor’s, unless it really doesn’t interest you to get one.
