I have two US schools to choose from: Cornell and Duke. Both are giving me very little aid and I will have to repay a lot once I graduate.
I also got into McGill in Canada where I would pay roughly $10,000 US per year. So, 4 years there would total about 1 year at Cornell or Duke.
My question is: is it worth paying the extra money and going to those excellent American schools? Or is going to McGill going to get me as far in a much cheaper way? The programs I got into at each of those schools are different but I'd like to have an idea of what other people would do in my situation. Thanks!

It depends on the major. 100K to get a college degree vrs not getting a college degree at all is definitely worth it. However is a degree at Duke worth 100K more than a degree at McGill? That will depends on what your career is. There are some fields such as Law and medicine where the extra money can be worth it. But there are others such as Computer Science where it is not. Talk to people in your chosen career and see if the sucessful people all have degrees from famous colleges, or if it doesnt seem to matter where their degree came from - it is often just important to have a degree from a decent college and noonne cares where you got it.

thanks timcob, anyone else wanna share their thoughts on my situation?

McGill is an excellent university and I would consider it to be an equal to either Duke or Cornell. I don't think you can go wrong at any of them...

I agree with timcob's statement that law and medicine are two fields where a school's reputation does matter. However, this really applies more to the graduate school you attend, not undergraduate. A lot depends on whether you plan to go to grad school or not. If so, I would definitely save the money on undergrad. If not, well, I really can't be of much help because I don't know anything about McGill.
