Is it worth transferring?

I am currently at the Stern School of Business at NYU. However, now after one year at Stern, I think I want to do medicine. I am going to wait one more semester (fall Sophomore) and take a mix of business and pre-med classes to decide if I actually want to make the switch from Business to pre-med. NYU has the option for me to do both, but I feel that it might be a little overambitious. If I choose to leave Business and switch to arts (on a pre-med track), I will want to transfer to an arts school rather than to remain at Stern. NYU CAS is a possibility, but I would probably want to go to a school that is slightly more challenging.

My stats are as follows:

HS:

IB - HL Chemistry 6 Physics 7 English 6 SL Economics 7 Math 7 Spanish 6
Bonus Points: 1
Total: 40

GPA Approximately 3.8

SATs: CR 620 W 700 M 790

ECs: Investing Society - won 1st prize in a national investing competition, Extensive overseas volunteer experiences, math awards, substantial work experience, varsity tennis and cricket, debating at the regional level.

College GPA: 3.867/4.0

Major: Finance (currently taken only business classes, writing and Calculus)

I am currently looking at John's Hopkins, Columbia (though I feel this might be a reach), Georgetown. Are there any (other) schools in the northeast that have good pre-med programs?

Also, would it make the most sense to just stay at NYU? I don't know too much about transfer applications - are they generally more or less competitive than freshman applications? Will high school stats weigh in heavily? I assume my transfer would be as a fall Junior?

Thanks so much!

You can complete the sequence of pre-Med classes at just about any college, university, or even community college in the USA. You can major in just about any academic field while you complete the pre-Med courses (my personal favorite: classical archaeology). When it comes time to apply to med school, your overall GPA, your GPA in the pre-Med courses, your letters of recommendation, and your MCAT scores will be important. Ultimately, it really won't matter all that much where you earned your degree (NYU? SUNY?) or where you completed your pre-Med courses.

So, if you are happy at NYU, just stay there. Transfer into the CAS if you want to, or stay at Stern if you want to.

If you want out of NYU, then take a look around and figure out where you can finish your undergraduate degree with the best grades and the least financial expense. Med school is hideously expensive so you may want to save your pennies while you can!

Thanks for the reply.

I wouldn't mind completing pre-med at NYU but I just feel that I would get better quality of education at another university. My General Chemistry Class this year is almost 700 students! I sat in on a Columbia class and found a world of difference compared to NYU.

Cheers,

700?! (700 char)
