I’m going to be applying to attend JMU, but what’s the atmosphere like for queer females? I know that there are more females than males, and that people are generally accepting of gay guys, but the experience of a lesbian girl is going to be different anywhere. I’ve talked to some straight people, but I feel like they’re not really going to be able to give me an accurate picture. I can “pass” as straight because I’m really feminine, but I’d like to go somewhere with an established LGBTQ community that encompasses more than just men, and have dating options if I wanted.
Hey, I’m lesbian and I go to JMU! In my experience everyone I have met has been really accepting, however there is a serious lack of easy to find gay women. As far as I can tell there is no real gay-straight alliance or LGBT club that has regular meetings, which would be the best place to meet other lesbians. Maybe I’m not looking in the right place and I’m only a freshman, but I guess its hard to find. I have however, found queer girls in the clubs I am in so they do exist, just not super easy to find. Hope that helps, even though it isn’t ideal JMU is a wonderful place and I think you should still consider it.
