I am currently in my second year of college, and have decided to change my major. Having previously been a Political Science major, I want to switch to either Spanish or Marketing. It doesn’t look like I can double and graduate in 4 years, but I could stay another year and get both Marketing and Spanish degrees. However, I would really like to graduate in 4 years. Spanish has always come easy to me and it is my strongest academic area. I love the language and culture and want to continue studying it throughout college. My only concern is job availability. I want to work in sales and marketing. My question is this: would a Spanish degree allow me to do that? What’s the added benefit of double majoring in Marketing in Spanish in 5 years? Should complete my Spanish degree in 4 years? My school does not offer a business minor (the only thing close to business is environmental economics)
Job availability will depend on your internships and fluency. You don’t need a Marketing major, but take at least one statistics class and a couple basic classes (Micro and macro economics, plus one more that’s economics or business related, should do the trick). Ideally you’d have an internship in a Spanish speaking environment this summer, then spend a semester or a year abroad, becoming fluent and having an internship there during Junior Year, and go on to a stronger summer internship in a company in the summer after junior year.

No. Hispanics in the US already speak Spanish better than you, and there are a lot of them.
