Is Mechanical Engineering tough at UCI?

Hello i will be a freshman at uci in the fall quarter. I am wondering why people say that engineering is tough. I know that you have to take a lot of math and physics but why does this make engineering so tough? Ive also heard about the load of homework they give. Also shouldnt this major be doable as long as you take the minimum credits required? It would help if i got some answers from former/current engineering students from uci. Thank You!

It’s tough because it requires more courses. Average 17 units/quarter to graduate in 4 years assuming no prior credits.

Also the amount of peers is less than some other majors (which could be good or bad). http://www.oir.uci.edu/deg/IVA02SS-degree-type-by-major.pdf?R=449082

Everybody has different opinions.

Another question: are non engineering students allowed to take engineering courses at UCI? Or are they only open to students enrolled in the Henry Samueli school of engineering?

In my experience every person has their own strengths and weaknesses, so some majors are easier for others. I think in order to graduate you need at least 180 units and it depends on the major. My strength is writing, so I didn’t do well in certain classes that just wanted multiple-choice tests, so I adjusted my major according to that. You should just pick a major that plays to your strengths. If there is room in lower division engineering classes, you can definitely take them and see if they intrigue you.
