Is my dream fading away or is there still hope

Howdy ya'll i just want to start off saying GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!!!!! now lets cut to the chase. I have always wanted to get into the united states naval academy....i've dreamed about it so many times..i've walked it with my own footsteps like many have... its the place for me but there is a slight problem. i'm going to plain honest cause i know there others like me who want to get in, but run in with the same problem.i'm not the smartest kid in my class and im not a top athlete.i'm currently a junior I'm currently 365 out of 744 in my class rank(49% of the class) and my GPA is about a 3.0...i haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet(not til march) and got a 135 on the PSAT...I am a JROTC cadet officer, high effective leader and i will be applying to Boys state, and an internship with Boeing...have a enormous passion for the naval academy

I have been in put into horrible situations of hazing in my old school which led to the academic struggle but i demonstrated leadership in putting it to a stop and possibly saving many lives. so my question is for all others out there like me....Do i still have a chance...and what should i and others like me do to help raise our chances to get in.

1) Do well on the PSAT
2) Do the best you can now to raise your grades
3) Even if you aren’t appointed for direct admission, maybe for NAPs or a Foundation program.

Unfortunately, wanting it cannot solely get you in. I’m sure they’ll take into account your situation though. If you don’t get in, you can always go to college for a year, and reapply.

Do you have any sports?

Unfortunately not…and yes i was considering NAPS but someone once told me that NAPS was only accepting enlistedmen…my parents dont want me to go enlisted but i was considering VMI or the citadel if i can’t get into NAPS…

Your passion for the USNA is admirable, understandable, and shared by thousands. And here’s the pinch, many of those thousands will have superior stats, if not superior hearts. In asking your thoughtful, genuine question, you show the maturity and courage to seek an answer that you may already have a handle on.

Generally, absent being a member of a high-profile priority group, your profile does not match up well, and the disparity is significant. From what you’ve shared about your situation, there is not evidence that would encourage your unbridled pursuit of admission to USNA. You’ll be devoting much energy, time, and other resource in the application process, and the odds of successful results would seem to be very slim, improbable if not impossible. That will be your decision.

Still, it is very important to get some perspective, which you already are grasping. USNA is merely a means to an end. There are other avenues to Naval or Marine Corps service. VMI and The Citadel are GREAT places and fully attainable to prepare you for military service. Others are VA Tech, Norwich, Texas A&M and any number of the maritime academies.

And in this vein, you might want to take a look at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Pt,NY. An outstanding place with options for Naval service upon graduation.

Good luck.

NAPS is not just for prior-enlisted, but it is where most go first. Athletes and those with academic deficiencies also go there.

135 on the PSAT I think is low by their standards. I agree with Whistle Pig that realistically you do not match up strongly with other candidates.
That does not mean it is impossible, just that the odds on paper are not strong. That being said, one NEVER knows for sure just who they will pick and why!

KIDDO1220,

I just went to the Academy this past week with my DS and sat in on the admissions brief. The LT said there was no min. SAT or ACT that they look for. That being said it remains a strong isconsideration. 135 on the PAST a 1350 on the SAT or so it’s a rule of thumb. Take the SAT ASAP and see where you are weak and prep, prep, prep, and take it again. There is a way to take the test, do some research. You should also take the ACT some kids do better on that.

My DS is being looked at for one of their D1 sports but will still need to walk the walk just like you. He has put in a great deal of effort to he studies. SAT prep, sports, helping others, and countless other steps to get in over the past 3 years. This is not easy for any kid.

You can do this but you need to put in the effort and work hard to achieve your goal. This is a very competative Academy.
