I’m at a magnet school for Health Science so I’m required to take advanced medical classes so I don’t have room for stem ap classes though I would take ap bio or ap chem
I’m surprised you don’t have more top science classes on the transcript. If you want to go to college in the sciences or pre-med, then highest level math/science makes more sense.
If you want to change direction it’s 100% you! Then the magnet may not work as well for you.
I would love to take more advanced science classes but the amount of classes I have to take in order to stay in the academy of health science I have to take a certain amount of advanced health classes
To Stay in the Academy of Health Science I have to take
Freshman Year
Medical Terminology
Sophomore Year
Principles in Health Science
Junior Year
Health Science Theory
AND
Dual Credit Anatomy and Physiology I & II (one class per semester)
Senior Year
Practicum in Certified Medical Assisting OR Practicum in Nurse Assisting
AND
Pathophysiology OR Electrocardiography
Since this and varsity orchestra take up all of my electives, I’m not able to take the ap science and math electives. I don’t really want to take ap physics or ap calc ab, even though I could, but I probably wouldn’t succeed. At my school, it’s normal not to have room in your schedule to take other classes than what subject your magnet school is, unless your not in one. For example:
The Academy of Psychological Studies
Freshman Year
Psychology I
Sophomore Year
Psychology II
Junior Year
AP Psychology
AND
Sociology I
Senior Year
Internship in Psychology
AND
Sociology II
The Academy of Science and Technology Freshman Year
Scientific Research and Design
Sophomore Year
AP Computer Science Principles
AND
AP Statistics
Junior Year
AP Physics I
AND
AP Calculus BC
AND
At least 2 AP STEM electives
Senior Year
Internship in STEM
AND
AP Physics II
AND
Multivariable Calculus III
AND
At least 1 AP STEM elective
The Academy of Pharmacy Technology Freshman Year
Principles in Pharmacy Technology
Sophomore Year
Pharmacy Calculations
Junior Year
Pharmacy Information Systems
AND
Pharmacology
Senior Year
Practicum in Pharmacy Technology
AND
AP Chemistry
There are many magnet schools at my high school due to the large number of students in the district and the amount of competitive academics there are. They’re very selective and usually have 20-50 students in each grade in the specific academy. The only classes they take that are exclusive to the magnet school are the required classes each year. So they will take “non academy” classes for anything that’s not the required courses.
Here are all of the magnet schools my school has (most selective to least selective):
The Academy of Science and Technology
The Academy of Engineering
The Academy of Health Science
The Academy of Dental Assisting
The Academy of Business and Industry
The Academy of Pharmacy Technology
The Academy of Psychological Studies
The Academy of Architecture Design
The Academy of Fine Arts
The Academy of Cosmetology
JROTC Academy
So my point is that students at the magnet schools don’t have much room to take classes other than the ones offered at the magnet school and their sport/extracurricular.
Are you able to replace the dual credit college algebra with honors pre-cal or even regular pre-cal? If you end up doing a program in college that requires calculus, it would be extremely beneficial to have had pre-cal ahead of time. It can really throw you off track if you’re behind in math sequencing for many majors and can prevent you from moving forward in science classes while you catch up.
Would you be also be able to skip AP Econ or AP Gov for an AP science instead?
First, only your school /counselor can give you detailed information on if your schedule/track is in line with your college goals. Overall, to me, it appears your schedule is great and will help get you in to many many colleges around the country!
Second…do you have any idea yet what types of colleges you are aiming for, or what career eventually? You can get a great education many places, so you do not need to worry…but some students on CC have a hyper focus on super selective colleges–just wondering if that is true in your case.
