I know that all large cities have their rough areas, but do you generally feel safe living in Nashville?

Vandy has a really great private police force. Also, Vanderbilt is located in a more affluent area of Nashville that’s kind of hipster, unlike Tennessee State University which is located in a much rougher area. Like all other colleges, Vandy has blue boxes, and when I was on campus at night once and got lost, they were very prompt about sending security to pick me up.

I certainly have never felt unsafe. VUPD is very active/friendly on campus. They made something crazy like two arrests all year for public intoxication, despite regularly monitoring drunk students-- they really are there to make sure the campus is safe, not to get people in trouble.

I would say the Vanderbilt “bubble” is a very safe area. As are the highly populated bar areas. The areas inbetween, well, its a large city, so you have to be careful just like in any other city.

I agree with chaosakita and Pancaked. Nashville on the whole may have some crime issues, but the area around Vanderbilt is very safe (and nice).

Graduated there a couple years.

It’s a safe area overall. I don’t know how many times I’ve walked from downtown back to campus. As with any other big city, just don’t be stupid and wander into rundown-looking areas or anywhere else that gives you bad vibes.

There are always a few sketchy characters near an ER at odd hours, so you are aware that you are on a campus connected to a major regional hospital…same at Duke. Crime stats are published and you can find them online, and you will note that some crimes are taking place in or near the hospital.
