I know it’s not for UCs, but for some CSUs (like SJSU) it says that there are major exceptions. Like computer science and nursing majors don’t have to take PE classes.
PE is not an a-g course requirement for the Cal States either.

Sorry, I did not read your post clearly since I thought you are a Freshman applicant. The way I read your link, is that PE is an option to fulfill up to 2 units of the 4-5 quarter units needed for Area E. It Is not required if you take your 4-5 quarter units from the Non-Activity courses listed.
