Has anyone else noticed the quantity of online fundraising going on with teens? My D showed me several from her facebook news feed. Kids are using sites typically meant to raise funds for charities in an attempt to raise college money. Some are looking for 2 or 3K but others are looking for 25K. I wonder if their parents know about it. Personally, I'd not feel comfortable with my child doing this at all.

Just curious if it's a national trend of something starting in our pocket.

I haven’t seen this myself yet, so this is news to me. Few questions I have: are they asking for funds from strangers? If so, how do they get strangers to ‘donate’ for them? What makes the strangers compelled to give them money?
If I were to even do this, I don’t think I would even be able to get a dime from anyone.

They are using public sites like GoFundMe and giving the link on Facebook… and asking their friends to re-post. So, a collection of people they know (though mostly other kids) and friends of friends. They have their picture and their bio with why they need the money and what it’ll be used for. They don’t seem to be doing that well so maybe it’ll be a short lived trend.

A few years ago, a Philadelphia high school teacher was accepted to Harvard for some graduate program. He tried to do a chipin campaign. His story was written up in the Inquirer where it was widely jeered in the comments. He raised about 3k and ended up borrowing the rest of his shortfall.
