Is psychology a good major for medical school?

I am applying for a psychology major and also want to go to medical school for psychiatry. Is this a good option?

I am a current psych major who is on the pre-med track. I am a freshman and I am currently considering to either apply to med school to pursue psychiatry or grad school to become a clinical psychologist. The reason I am considering clinical psych instead of psychiatry is because I have spoken to both my pre-med and psych advisor and they have said that if I want a more personal approach with my patients I should consider becoming a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist who put more emphasis on medication. I would say if you are set on psychiatry then being a psych major on the pre med track would be a good fit. I would also like to mention what many people may say on this site. You don’t have to have an specific major to be pre-med. Pre-med is a track of certain courses you have to take to be able to apply to med school. So don’t feel like you have to major in psychology.

Any major is fine as long as you complete the required pre-med coursework.

Another thing I am worried about is the cost of med school. Do we get any type of financial aid?

@itsintheprocess Will you be able to graduate in time by being a psych major along with completing your prerequisites simultaneously? Also, do you know anything about being a public health major?
